ROBINSON AFRICAN METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH, LACHINE QUÉBEC CANADA
THE HISTORY.
To date, this is the first and only African Methodist Episcopal church (AME) within the Province of Québec. There has always been an AME presence in Montreal dating as far back to as 1839.
Robinson A.M.E church was registered on the 8th of March 1922, in the year of our Lord. The church was named after one of Bishop’s. The church lay dormant for many years, but it was resurrected in 1985 by Rev. Rodney Nurse, who pastored the church from 1985 until 1997.
During those years, the church was relocated several times due to inadequate space and lack of funds. One former member recalls the church being in the downtown core of the city of Montréal on a street called Charlevoix. He also recalls the church using and sharing a building with a Seven Day Adventist congregation.
In 1990, the church was moved to the city of LaSalle in a Black Community Center and worshiped there until 1996. The center was forced to move from that location, and consequently so was the church. Robinson AME was relocated to a commercial building on Juliette Street in the heart of the city of LaSalle, in a commercial building. However, its stay there was short lived as well.
Complaints were brought to the city by neighboring residence, who stated that the church was a source of noise pollution. By then, the church had grown to 15 Adult’s and about 8 Children. The church, with its mixture of Caribbean and North American blend was making a joyful noise unto the Lord their God.
The city responded to such complaints by notifying the church in writing that they must relocate within 30 days. It was during this period of transition that the church suffered a notable set back. The church broke apart and almost lost its entire flock.
Following this, pastor Rev. Rodney Nurse was asked to step down from his post by then presiding Elder, Rev. Lloyd Oliver Jenkins. A young licentiate named Randolph Joel Phillips was asked to take the church three Sundays per month until a replacement pastor was found. His only leadership experience was as the YPD President for five consecutive years, and YPD Director for two and a half years.
The Robinson AME Church then found its home in the basement of a shopping complex on Lafleur Street in the same City of LaSalle on September 1st, 1997. Ministers from the Canadian Conference of AME churches were rotated to assist the church for the first couple of years until Rev. Phillips received his first ordination as a Local Deacon in 2000 and was given the charge in full.
Under the leadership of Presiding Elder Lloyd Oliver Jenkins, Randolph Joel Phillips and the thirteen faithful members who returned to the church; Robinson the church was given life anew and grew. Today, the total full membership of the church is 117. Since the year 2000 During these years, the church has consecrated 4 Deaconesses. It has ordained 3 Ministers, and sadly only one has remained faithful to the church to date, (Rev. Randolph J. Phillips), our beloved Pastor of 23 years.
Because of its growth and vision of our pastor we continue the task of soul winning and kingdom building, On July 1st, 2008, the church was relocated from Suite 16 - 382 Lafleur to Suite 51, a much larger room in the same building. One year later, on July 16th, 2009, Robinson AME purchased and took possession of its first church property located at 598 - 5th Avenue, Lachine Quebec, a 10 minutes’ drive from their previous location.
On September 5th, 2009, the church moved into their building and began worshiping in it the following day. Robinson AME church was dedicated unto the Lord, on January 24th, 2010, by The Rt. Rev. John Richard Bryant, Presiding Prelate & Senior Bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Church (AME). He was accompanied by Rev. Dr. Cecelia Williams Bryant, Senior Episcopal Supervisor, Rev. Cory Allen Cory Millben, Presiding Elder of the Climbing Canadian Conference, along with other Pastors of the Canadian Conference, several Local Clergies and over wo hundred witnesses.
Robinson AME Church continues to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, uplift the fallen, welcome and receive the rejected and neglected. Be a shelter for the lost and broken, a spiritual hospital for wounded and afflicted souls, and to empower its members through prayer, preaching and teaching sound doctrine.
Here at Robinson AME, we are one family, and everyone who walks through our doors are welcomed and treated as such. Our church remains an important part of our community by living out our motto: God Our Father, Christ Our Redeemer, the Holy Spirit Our Comforter, Humankind Our Family!
We continue to express our gratitude and thanks to everyone whose contributions over the years help keeps us relevant and effective. For which we give God all the glory!
